We have been approached many times ~ asking what is the difference between an interior decorator and an interior designer. Though the two are often used interchangeably, as if they were identical professions, the two are not synonymous. Both may have the ability and talent to create beautiful rooms, as well as roles that overlap, they are different.
Let's take a closer look at the two professions . . .
One of the biggest differences is an "Interior Designer" has the formal education, experience, and affiliations, such as being an allied member of The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). (Our designer has such)
"Interior Decorators" are mainly concerned with surface decoration. Often characterized as the furnishing or adorning of a space. Yes, interior designers do that as well, but they also go steps farther. It is the responsibility of an interior designer to identify, research and creatively resolve issues. Many times they deal with contractors and complicated schedules. It is not uncommon for an interior designer to supervise over elaborate remodels, such as a kitchen and bath redesigns, as well as room additions.
It is very important to know the difference between the two professions, and who you are hiring. Is the person an interior decorator, or an interior designer? ASK!
Join us next week when we elaborate more about this subject, and show you how to choose a qualified interior designer.
