In today's world, mealtime can give much meaning to different people. For some it may be a time to gather as a family and disclose the day's events. Others, a quick and simple meal before everyone scatters, or a time of relaxation.
Whatever way you or your family gathers, we have some great ideas on dining at home.
Ever notice how dining can take place in so many different areas of your home?
Tonight it might be dinner for five in the dining room. Tomorrow morning ~ coffee and a muffin in the kitchen / breakfast nook. And on Sunday morn, perhaps brunch in the master suite. All that variety demands creative space planning!
Double Duty Dining:
While home building costs are on the rise and square footage seems to be shrinking, a formal dining room may not be in the plans. You may realize an "extra" room, such as a den is appropriate for you and your family's lifestyle; while a formal dining room would rarely be used. THIS room can actually do both!
Let the table double as a desk, while the hutch can hold books and dishes. Or push the table to one side and add a small love seat and easy chairs that can double as dining seats. (NOTE: be sure the seats are close to 18" high, for proper seating)
Squeeze A Table into unexpected areas. A half round table or drop-leaf table in a hallway can serve as a lunch-for-two spot. How about placing a modest rectangular dining table behind a sofa or against a wall in the family room or dining room. The sofa table can serve as a table when you pull-up a couple of chairs.
* These table examples are great suggestions for those with
"smaller" living spaces also! *
Want to create a romantic B&B feel in your master bedroom? Snug a slim dining table or sofa table against the foot of the bed or in front of a window. Perhaps place an elegant wooden desk in the stated areas . . . creating a dual-purpose.
Another creative way to bring the B&B experience, is to replace the bed's nightstand with a larger table. Perfect space for breakfast in bed or a night-time snack.
With a little imagination, you can create a dining room in an unexpected area! Just remember to reflect your decorating taste and your lifestyle.
Happy Decorating!
