Shed Some Light

With a flick of a switch you can work decorating magic with lighting. The right light can set a new mood, enrich colors, spotlight art and collectibles, and make any room appear at it's best.

Unfortunately, this is one decorating must-have that is overlooked. Many think of lighting as only a necessity, that the sole purpose is task related. Yes, we need lighting to read by, eat by, etc., however, well-balanced lighting goes beyond the typical floor-reading lamp or the centered ceiling fixture.

By layering the essential building blocks of lighting ~ general, task and accent, you have the makings of a functional, yet inviting, room.
  • General Lighting allows you to move throughout the room safely. An even distribution of light is key. Recessed canisters, track lighting, chandeliers and hanging fixtures can be good general light sources. Add a dimmer control and you can instantly set any mood.

  • Task Lighting provides the necessary illumination one needs for reading, cooking, hobbies, and the like. Position lights to avoid casting shadows.

  • Accent Lighting has a decorative function and can come from several sources. Including floor-based uplight and torcheres to sconces and direct spotlights. Accent lighting is to draw your eye to the room's most interesting aspects . . . a favorite piece of art or architectural element. Accent lighting is also a great way to "add" ambiance to any room.

With the right mix of these illumination elements, you can bring cheer to any room, create drama, emphasis favorite pieces, and visually adjust a room's standards.
