- Where do you plan to put the lighting fixture?
- Is it compatible in size and scale of adjacent furnishings?
- Does it fit the style of your room?
These answers will forecast a hit or miss!
Proper size and height for lighting is critical !
- Do not use table lamps that are too small or large for the end table, night stand or dresser top.
As a general rule lamps need to be 28" - 32" tall for end tables and nightstands, while dresser top lamps in an adult room should be 20" - 24" tall. Children's rooms can accommodate smaller lamps.
The visual weight of the base for table top lamps - not the actual dimensions - should be about two-thirds of the entire lamp, with the shade making up the remaining third.
Hanging fixtures - over a dining table - should be about 1/3 the table width and close to 2' - 3' above the table top. Not too low to block diners' views of each other, and not too high to leave a gaping hole above the table.
Of course this rule changes for hanging fixtures in entry ways, bedrooms or bathrooms. The fixture needs to be properly hung for head space, and placed to appeal to the room.
Lighting is such a key component to any room decor, but one that is highly looked over. Add drama to your room ~ add beautiful lighting!
